Animation Professionals Over 90 Still Alive

10 years ago, Cartoon Brew had an article about animators from the Golden Age and beyond over a certain age still living.

Unfortunately, the lion's share of that group have since passed away, save for a handful of names. For this post, I would like to highlight (in age order) those from studios like Disney, Warner Brothers as well as independent bases that are around today who represent the last living links to old school animation. Today, I would like to show you two books that I have read for research for my novella „Dreams of Loki“

„Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion“ by Marlene Winell Ph. D. (from 2006)

This is specifically about leaving Christianity and not much is said about changing to a different spiritual path but rather leaving spirituality completely. However, the book is really insightful, it offers a lot of advice about how to get rid of „spiritual baggage“ so to speak and is recommendable in my eyes.

„Changing Paths“ by Yvonne Aburrow (from 2023)

This book is basically for anybody who is contemplating to change their spiritual path, be it from Christianity to paganism, from paganism to something else or a different kind of spiritual journey. The book offers some theological theories and general thoughts about what spirituality/religion is and why it can be enrich your life. Other topics include reasons for leaving a specific path, religion and gender, ethics and more. There are exercises included, for instance journal prompts and guided meditations. I think this book is recommendable too.

There is just one point I do not agree with. The author emphasizes more than once that it is very important to find a spiritual community and meet like-minded people in person. Of course this can be beneficial, but on the other hand, there are also solitary witches and pagans who explore their spiritual paths by themselves, without a spiritual group or a coven etc. My novella gets published as a ebook on April 1, 2024 (no joke) in all Amazon shops and can be pre-ordered.

Barbara Ann Lewis (February 9, 1943) is a singer and songwriter whose smooth style influenced rhythm and blues.

She was born in Salem, Michigan.

She was writing and recording in her teens with record producer Ollie McLaughlin, a DJ at Ann Arbor radio station WHRV, now WAAM. Her first single release, the uptempo” My Heart Went Do Dat Da” in 1962, did not chart nationally but was a local hit in Detroit. She wrote all of the songs on her debut LP, including the hit “Hello Stranger” which reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and featured extensive use of the Hammond organ. Lewis had moderate follow-up hits with “Straighten Up Your Heart” (#43) and her original “Puppy Love” (#38) before Bert Berns produced her million-seller “Baby I’m Yours” (US #11). Berns produced the follow-up “Make Me Your Baby” (U.S. #11) which had originally been recorded by the Pixies Three, and Lewis’s final Top 40 hit “Make Me Belong to You” (#28 in 1966), written by Chip Taylor and Billy Vera.

Her composition “Hello Stranger”, which had been remade in 1966 by the Capitols—was a regional hit in 1973 as remade by Fire & Rain, and in 1977 Yvonne Elliman’s version reached the US Top 20 and the UK Singles Chart Top 30: Elliman’s version topped the US Easy Listening chart for four weeks. Carrie Lucas’s remake of “Hello Stranger” was a Top 20 R&B hit and in 2004 Queen Latifah remade “Hello Stranger” for her The Dana Owens Album.

Health issues forced her to retire from singing (2017).

She received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999. In 2016, she was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Carissimi lettori, ben ritrovati con un nuovo appuntamento con LIAFF Special, la rubrica dove andremo a riscoprire i titoli più caldi del mese di Ottobre, fra cinema e serie TV, in un mese che si prospetta essere molto interessante...

CINEMA

Joker: Folie à Deux (Cinema - 2 Ottobre)

Il mese di Ottobre si apre con uno dei film più attesi dell'anno e già approdato di recente al Festival del Cinema di Venezia. Dopo il mirabolante successo del primo film del 2018, che fruttò anche un Oscar a Joaquin Phoenix come miglior attore protagonista, Todd Philipps ci riprova, portando la storia di Arthur Fleck in una direzione completamente nuova e sperimentale, dando un'anima gemella al nostro villain, interpretata da Lady Gaga, e aggiungendo l'elemento musical, che ha già fatto storcere il naso a diverse persone. C'è parecchia curiosità riguardo a questo film, con la speranza che non sia una delusione.

The Wild Robot (Cinema - 10 Ottobre)

Presentato in anteprima al Festival del Cinema di Toronto e rilasciato nei cinema statunitensi questa settimana, The Wild Robot, ultimo film che vedrà le animazioni firmate interamente da DreamWorks, potrebbe essere uno dei migliori film d'animazione dell'anno, vantando anche un cast d'eccezione, almeno per la lingua originale, che annovera nomi come Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal e Mark Hamill, fra gli altri. Un film che va sicuramente visto.

Megalopolis (Cinema - 16 Ottobre)

Dopo aver spaccato in due la critica al Festival di Cannes, l'ultima opera di Francis Ford Coppola, che rischiava di non venire distribuita, potrà finalmente essere vista dal grande pubblico. Con protagonista Adam Driver, il film è descritto come una fiaba in un epoca moderna, che vede la realizzazione di un sogno utopico e uno sguardo sul futuro. Sarà un opera epica e ricca di significato o un delirio senza scopo? Toccherà vederlo per scoprire la risposta.

We Live in Time (Cinema - 17 Ottobre)

Altro film proveniente dal festival di Toronto, dove è stato ampiamente acclamato dalla critica, We Live in Time, film drammatico diretto da John Crowley (Brooklyn), vede una giovane chef (Florence Pugh) innamorarsi di un uomo che ha da poco divorziato (Andrew Garfield) e la loro storia si presenta come un racconto d'amore, ma soprattutto di sofferenza. Una pellicola per cui serviranno i fazzoletti.

The Substance (Cinema - 30 Ottobre)

Premiato per la miglior sceneggiatura al Festival di Cannes, The Substance vede Demi Moore e Margaret Qualley protagoniste di un thriller-horror di stampo cronenberghiano, dove la crudezza dei particolari e i momenti più terrificanti fungono da veicolo per una pellicola dal significato non banale. Un film da non perdere.

SERIE TV

The Franchise (HBO - 7 Ottobre)

Nel panorama seriale, il mese di Ottobre si apre con The Franchise, comedy di stampo meta-cinematografico ambientanto nel mondo dei cinecomic. Sì, avete letto bene. Questa serie sarà una vera e propria parodia dei film sui supereroi, ma anche sui processi creativi dietro queste pellicole, ultimamente sempre più oggetto di critiche e discussioni. Al momento non abbiamo una data per l'Italia, ma contiamo che possa arrivare al più presto.

Teacup (Peacock - 10 Ottobre)

Altra serie di cui non abbiamo ancora una data (purtroppo...) è Teacup, nuova produzione horror targata James Wan. Tratta da un romanzo di Robert McCammon, la serie vede Yvonne Strahovski e Scott Speedman interpretare due persone che fanno parte di un gruppo che si ritrova in un ranch del Texas ad affrontare un'oscura minaccia. Un titolo che speriamo possa arrivare nel nostro Bel Paese.

Disclaimer (Apple TV+ - 11 Ottobre)

Presentata in anteprima al Festival del Cinema di Venezia, Disclaimer è una miniserie thriller creata da Alfonso Cuarón e con un cast stellare, composto da Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron-Cohen e Kodi Smit-McPhee. In una storia fatta di segreti, traumi del passato e situazioni compromettenti, la serie promette di essere un'esperienza unica nel suo genere, con colpi di scena che si susseguono in maniera prepotente. Va decisamente vista.

Shrinking 2 (Apple TV+ - 16 Ottobre)

Dopo il grande successo della prima stagione, la dramedy Shrinking vedrà il duo Jason Segel-Harrison Ford affrontare le conseguenze degli eventi della prima stagione, ritrovandosi di fronte a situazioni imprevedibli derivanti dalle loro terapie non convenzionali. Un'altra serie Apple da aggiungere alla watch-list.

Star Trek: Lower Decks 5 (Paramount + - 24 Ottobre)

Anche i fan di Star Trek possono gioire questo mese, con l'arrivo della quinta e purtroppo ultima stagione di Star Trek: Lower Decks, la serie animata che narra le gesta di quattro giovani guardiamarina e della loro nave, la USS Cerritos. Fra situazioni assurde e risate a non finire, ci aspetta un ultimo atto davvero irresisitibile.
